6. Science and the Near Death Experience: Chris Carter, PHD [link] (note - this can be a pretty heavy read, but Chris Carter is a philosopher and super smart guy. Several of his "debates" with skeptics are also available online - and while occasionally a bit belligerent, he is a strong advocate that NDE's are overwhelming empirical evidence that consciousness survives the death of the body, and offers good evidence for his conclusions)
7. Near Death Experiences in Indigenous Religions: Gregory Shushan [Link] (big fan of all of his work - and all of his books are highly recommended reading for those of us interested in the similarities and differences in NDE's across cultures, continents and belief systems)
8. Consciousness Beyond Life: Pim Van Lommel [Link]
9. Irreducible Mind: Edward & Emily Kelly, et al [Link] Note - this is super duper heavy reading - expensive (kindle version is $50) - but amongst the best books available for folks who are well versed in the science of consciousness, with all of it's jargon, implications, and otherwise. (I had a hard time reading this, but I also struggled to spell Irreducible right without 3 spell checks. There are interviews with the authors that are much more accessible on Youtube - and their peers at the University of Virginia's division of perceptual studies, where much of the science around non local consciousness is being studied)
10. Journey of Souls: Dr. Michael Newton [Link] Note - this is much more about "past lives" than NDE's, and was recommended far more often by our newsletter readers and community, rather than those more invested in doing scientific research themselves. (many who study past life memories in a more rigorous way tend to discount memories that emanate from hypnosis or "regression". That said, many of Dr. Newton's patients reported experiences "in between lives" that are strikingly similar to NDE's, and offer a lot of interesting insights into what may happen between lives - for those that are interested in how different areas of research intersect.
11. The Wisdom of Near Death Experiences: Dr. Penni Satori. Big fan of Dr. Satori's research. Lots of good interviews with Dr. Satori available on Youtube as well - highly recommended. [Link]
12. The Handbook of Near Death Experiences: Dr. Jan Holden [Link] A tad dated simply due to focus on research up to/prior to 2008 or so, but timeless wisdom and highly recommended.
13. At Heaven's Door: What Shared Journeys to the Afterlife Teach About Dying Well and Living Better: William Peters [Link] (a long title - my fingers got tired typing it - but an excellent overview of shared death experiences by a bereavement therapist, hospice volunteer and community advocate for under served communities. Highly recommended for folks interested in "shared" death experiences, as distinct from "near death experiences".
14. Erasing Death: The Science That Is Rewriting the Boundaries Between Life and Death Dr. Sam Parnia [Link]
15. Note - I believe this is the most interesting work being done on NDE's in the real world, right now. Dr. Sam Parnia is the Director of the AWARE Study (AWAreness during REsuscitation), director of resuscitation research at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, and one of the world’s leading experts on the scientific study of death and near-death experiences. Super interesting guy - and fascinating research into the the seemingly slippery slope and evolving line between what it means to be fully alive - and definitely dead :) The good news is, through Dr. Parnia's work - more and more people are being brought back from the other side of this divide - and their stories will no doubt, inspire the future science around NDE's and consciousness itself. never quite sure what his conclusions are (they seem to change a bit over time) - but highly recommend Erasing Death - and following the AWARE study online.
